I think I have all the requirements - certainly on hardware, and I've downloaded DirectX10 and the C++ environment. So I install it, click on the shortcut, it opens for a microsecond and crashes every time.

It seems that you have fulfilled all the system requirements and installed the necessary components. However, it appears that there might be an issue with the Lytro Desktop program itself, causing it to crash upon opening. You may want to try reinstalling the software or reaching out to Lytro support for further assistance in resolving the crashing issue.
